Industry News 📰
Spotify Explores AI-generated Human-like Voices for Podcast Ad
Spotify is reportedly exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to develop podcast ads read in a human-like voice. Bill Simmons, founder and CEO of The Ringer, a podcast network acquired by Spotify in 2020, hinted at the development during a recent episode of his podcast. The process would involve obtaining permission from a human to use their likeness and then using a model of their voice to create ad reads for podcast episodes. While Spotify has not announced anything concrete yet, the company has already integrated AI into its platform, such as the AI-based music curation assistant DJ.
YouTube Tests RSS for Podcasts
YouTube has started testing a feature that allows podcasters to upload new episodes through RSS feeds, a functionality traditionally used in podcast platforms that YouTube had previously overlooked. This feature is currently being tested with key strategic partners like CNN One Thing and CityCast Pittsburgh. The process involves YouTube automatically uploading new episodes as they're released to RSS, using the show’s art to create a static image video to accompany the audio file. The platform can upload a back catalog via RSS, but the original publish dates will not align yet.
However, there are some limitations to using this feature. For instance, podcast statistics won't operate in a "passthrough" format and will only be available through YouTube directly. Another restriction is that podcasts uploaded this way cannot include regular ads, though sponsor segments are permitted if properly marked. YouTube has confirmed that it will roll out this feature to all users later this year, but an exact timeline has not been provided.
