Amazon Shuts Down Amp App, Ending Ambitious Radio Venture
Amazon is shutting down its Amp app, which aimed to reinvent radio by allowing users to create livestreaming radio shows. Despite the closure, some radio hosts, including Nick Cannon and Zach Sang, will continue working with Amazon in undisclosed roles. The app had plans to combine the best of radio and technology, blurring the lines between live streaming and podcasting. Amazon’s decision to end Amp comes amidst a series of cutbacks at the company, including layoffs affecting thousands of employees across different divisions.
Nominations Now Open for the 6th Annual Canadian Podcast Awards
The Canadian Podcast Awards is accepting nominations for their sixth annual event. They’re looking for the best Canadian podcasts in 31 categories. No entry fee is required, making it inclusive for all Canadian podcasters. Submit nominations by October 22, 2023. Judging will take place from October 29 to November 12, 2023, and winners will be announced online in December 2023. Last year’s event received over 600 submissions, with notable winners including You Made Me Queer, Our Native Land, Front Burner, and Parkdale Haunt.
Spotify Unlocks 150,000 Audiobooks for Free Listening
Spotify has announced that it is making more than 150,000 audiobooks available for free to its Premium subscribers in the UK and Australia. However, there is a limit of 15 hours of listening per month. Users can spread this allocation across an unlimited number of titles. If they need more than 15 hours, they have the option to purchase a 10-hour top-up. This move expands Spotify’s audio offerings, which already include over 100 million tracks and 5 million podcasts. The unlocking of audiobooks is expected to roll out to US Premium users later this year.

Podchaser has launched an AI-driven feature called Predictive Demographics. This feature analyzes the language spoken within a podcast to predict the age and gender of its potential audience, aiming to enhance podcast audience targeting for advertisers. It provides demographic data for over five million podcasts worldwide, offering comprehensive targeting options. Predictive Demographics is an expansion of Podchaser’s Collections+ targeting capability and is available to any podcast host, publisher, ad platform, or interested advertiser.

Resound, the AI podcast editor, has introduced five new automation tools to streamline podcast production. The updates include Enhance, which automatically mixes and masters podcasts with AI; Manually Trim Audio, allowing users to make edits by clicking and dragging; Silence Detection, which removes long pauses; Filler Sound Detection V0.7, an improved machine learning model for more accurate edits; and the V2 Editor, featuring instant sound previews and fast waveform loading. Resound aims to automate audio production and save podcasters time and effort. Users can leverage AI to edit faster, enhance sound quality, trim audio, and detect silences. Resound offers a free editing service.
